The aim of the SHEL project, an European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) project, isrnto demonstrate the market readiness of fuel cell materials handling vehicles and associated hydrogenrnrefuelling infrastructure, demonstrate end user acceptance of the concept and accelerate early marketrntake-up. Early successes for fuel cells have been in the area of battery replacement portable systemsrnand material handling vehicles such as lift trucks. Fuel cells offer advantages over the competingrnelectrochemical technology, including sustained high performance over the operating period and fasterrntimes to return the system to a full state.rnSHEL will demonstrate 10 FC FLTs and associated hydrogen refueling infrastructure across 3 sites inrnEurope. Real time information will be gathered to develop design improvements which will address thernkey technical requirements. SHEL will demonstrate end user acceptance of vehicles and associatedrnhydrogen refuelling structure in 3 different European Demonstrations: (Turkey, UK & Spain), eachrnrepresenting a likely early market segment (Airports, Light Logistics and Industrial) for futurerncommercialisation. Real time data will be gathered which will prove the advantages of using fuel cellsrnand zero carbon generated hydrogen compared to current technologies (diesel, LP, batteries).rnThe project has a well defined demonstration strategy to demonstrate 3 different hydrogen supplyrnmechanisms across 3 countries. The demonstrations sites have been selected to promote futurerncommercialisation projects. The UK demonstration will be at Newcastle International Airport, Spanishrndemonstration will be at the CEGA Logistics site in Vitoria, and the Turkish site will be within the PetkimrnPetrokyma (Turkey’s largest chemical complex).rnEach site will demonstrate a different type of infrastructure based upon future possible commercialrnhydrogen resources available in Europe. In the UK demonstration, it is planned to employ a currentrncommercial vehicle hydrogen refuelling station. In Spain, the project plans to use a different existingrnprototype modular hydrogen refuelling station, capable of supplying gas at up to 700 bar. It will be usedrnin conjunction with an electrolyser at the site: the intention is to power the electrolyser with gridrnelectricity, but to use the results obtained in a simulation modelling the use of renewable electricity. Thernsame refuelling unit will be used in Turkey, where the refuelling infrastructure will be based around anrnexisting hydrogen supply system and will demonstrate the use of industrial off-gas hydrogen.rnStarting the 1st of January 2011 and lasting for 36 months, the SHEL project is proposed by a consortiumrnof 13 partners from 7 EU Member States (UK, Spain, Greece, Turkey, and The Netherlands); thernconsortium includes all the appropriate key players to ensure the availability of technologies,rncapabilities, technical and operational knowledge required for the multidisciplinary goal of the project.rnThe SHEL project includes a strong involvement of industries, SMEs and research organizations, deeplyrninvolved in the hydrogen fuel cells sector.
