A wide range of techniques based on chemical degradation, dynamic mechanical analysis, chemical stress relaxation and finally determination of the critical fracture energy and stress have been proposed for the assessment of the weathering performance of basecoat/clearcoat automotive paint systems. On the basis of a presupposition of the existence of a correlation between the hygroscopic stress and the electrochemical impedance properties of coatings, attempts were made in the present paper, to investigate the possibility of evaluating the weathering performance of basecoat/clearcoat automotive paint systems through the determination of their electrochemical properties.
