Optimal lay-ups of long flat plates with flexural/twist anisotropy have been identified usingrnrecently derived approximate closed expressions for buckling loads. The plates have simply supportedrnedges and the effect of lateral movement of the longitudinal edges on buckling load and optimal layuprnis assessed. The closed form expressions are written in terms of non-dimensional materialrnproperties. In particular, a new parameter, ε, has been identified in assessing the buckling capacity ofrnlaminates of a particular lay-up. A major conclusion of the current work is that prevention of lateralrnmovement of longitudinal edges reduces buckling loads in all cases and that the optimal lay-up isrnexpected to be a strong function of the amount of elastic restraint at these edges.
