A multisensor, integrated system for subsurface interrogation and data fusion (smart engineering systems - general engineering applications)

The Integrated Subsurface Characterizaiton System (ISCS) is a multisensor platform designed for acquisition, analysis, and visualization of subsurface geophysical survey data. In past years, AlliedSignal Federal Manufacturing & Techologies (FM&T) has performed a number of subsurface site survey tasks, each of which was unique in the type of data processing and analysis required. Based on these field experiences, the following capabilities have been incorporated into ISCS: (1) in-situ processing for the acquisition, analysis, and visualization of survey data; (2) timely field analysis of acquired data; (3) sensor modularity to accommodate a wide range of sensor types for varying applications; (4) Global Positioning System (GPS) position tagging of the acquired data to register multiple data sets from different sensors; and (5) sensor fusion techniques for the correlation of data from the multiple sensors. The ISCS system architecture and principles of operation will be described. Results from key surveys will be presented. Potential future applications for ISCS will be discussed.
