Munich has adopted an integrated approach towards managing transport and actively seeks to benefit from the potential increases in efficiency obtainable through Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The development of a coherent traffic management system for the wider area of Munich is based on linking various important subsystems in the network. The hierarchical architecture developed, embodies different spatial and functional levels of control, to be optimally linked. This paper presents the approach taken towards the implementation of a coordinated traffic management in terms of system architecture, control strategies and traffic adapted models. Representing an important element of the envisaged traffic managment system, rerouting control integrating the urban and the motorway network has been subject to an extensive case study. The strategic approach developed and the models used for its validation are presented
