The potential for predicting pulp yield and basic density of 8-year-old Eucalyptus dunnii using near infrared spectroscopy (MRS) was examined using wood samples collected from trees grown on contrasting sites in New South Wales, Australia. Kraft pulp yield and basic density were determined for 82 individual trees. NIRS spectra were obtained from sawdust representative of each tree sample and of simulated core samples extracted at breast height, and used to generate calibrations of the measured pulp yield and basic density. The relationships indicated that NIRS could be used as a reliable predictor. The coefficients of determination for screened pulp yield and density were respectively 0.89 and 0.77. Core samples were found to be good predictors of whole tree screened pulp yield and basic density with respective coefficients of determination of 0.80 and 0.73.
