MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MAGNESIUM DIE CASTINGS

Rapid growth in the application of die cast magnesium alloy components in the automotive industry has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of factors that influence the properties of these materials. There is a wide variation in the quoted mechanical property data for magnesium die castings and casting process parameters can have a significant effect on the final outcome.rnThe present paper summarises recent work carried out within CAST that has increased our understanding of the relation between process and alloy parameters, microstructure and mechanical properties for die cast magnesium alloys (1-5). Most of the work has been done on alloy AZ91D but this is translatable to other magnesium-aluminium alloys. A comparison of the microstructures and creep properties of alloys AZ91, AE42 and AS21 serves to illustrate this point.
