A Combination Intravaginal Ring for the Protection Against HIV and Unwanted Pregnancy

We have developed a polyurethane intravaginal ring (IVR) that can provide sustained delivery of UC781 and levonorgestrel (LNG) for 30 days. The data from HPLC analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed no evidence of drug degradation at the extrusion conditions. Furthermore, the EpiVaginal™ in vitro tissue irritation model demonstrated that placebo and UC781-containing IVRs had no significant impact on cell viability, tissue integrity, and barrier function after 7 days. These results are encouraging for further development of these formulations for vaginal delivery of microbicides.
