Safety and Pharmacokinetics of a HIV Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor in Pig-tailed Macaques Using Elastomeric Intravaginal Rings

A prophylactic method is urgently needed to protect the thousands of women who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) every day. We fabricated polyurethane intravaginal rings to deliver the potent HIV inhibitor IQP-0532 to the vaginal tract and tested its safety and pharmacokinetics in pig-tailed macaque monkeys over a 30 day period. The high-loaded (13.7 wt% IQP-0532) IVRs delivered IQP-0532 to vaginal fluid and tissue throughout the entire dosage period yet appeared to be safe.
