The numerical prediction of rotor phenomena is still a challenge since it requires the concurrency of several disciplines. Over the past years a number of sophisticated tools have been developed with the aim of reducing approximations and improving predictions. These codes were in many cases linked to other codes on a one-to-one interface basis. Only a few attempts were dedicated to their integration in a unique framework. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the system and software engineering techniques which were applied in the European research programme IIOSAA to build a, simulation system where specialist codes belonging to different disciplines (structural dynamics, aeroelasticity, aerodynamics and a,eroacoustics) are able to exchange data between them. The system is first designed as an abstraction, then its elements are identified describing functionalities and defining capabilities. Finally the implementation of techniques is briefly outlined and the results of the most meaningful appIications are presented.
