The deployment of sensor networks in an aquaticrnenvironment has been severely limited because of thernunpredictable nature of the underwater environment.rnBuilding a low-cost, energy and resource efficientrnUnderwater Wireless Sensor Network (UWSN) will openrnnew vistas in the areas of ocean, river and lake monitoringrnand exploration. In this paper we present a novelrnarchitecture for a hypothetical UWSN that could berndeployed in the Bay-of-Bengal. This UWSN is an N-tierrnmodel with sensor nodes deployed at varying depths alongrnthe ocean column. The network can be re-configured basedrnon the deployment scenario and the application. This paperrnalso discusses various issues involved in developing arncross-layer protocol for the architecture proposed.
