Tendons made of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), i.e. glass or carbon fibers recently became interesting alternatives to conventional prestressing steel tendons. Main advantages of carbon fiber composite (CFC) elements are their high specific strength and modulus, outstanding corrosion resistance and low creep behavior. The greatest engineering problem using FRP-elements as tendons in prestressed structures is the transfer of the axial load from the long slender element into the anchoring zone. Another question is the influence of the FRP-elements on the load bearing behavior of the concrete structure. The paper gives an overview of theoretical and experimental investigations on CFC-elements and also some information on glass fiber bars, which can be used as reinforcement in rock engineering.
