The goal of this work was to improve the fracture toughness of S2 glass reinforced composites by the addition of sizing packages with controlled fiber-matrix adhesion and colloidal silica for fiber roughening. The addition of colloidal silica to the sizing package increased the mode II fracture toughness from 730 ± 80 J/m~2 to 1450 ± 130 J/m~2 without decreasing fiber strength or affecting dry and wet interfacial shear strength. FESEM analysis showed that roughening the fibers influenced the failure mechanism during mode II fracture.
