Under the MRCSP program, large volume injection testing and regional exploration of storage resources are helping to prepare for a future in the event there is a price placed on carbon emissions. CCS offers the most viable way to generate electricity at the current level, with readily available local resources, while significantly reducing the impact on the environment. CCUS - combining CCS with EOR - will help to provide a path forward to CCS, reducing CO_2 emissions, while at the same time increasing domestic oil production. The MRCSP project is providing data for improving capacity estimates and demonstrating storage capacity within a regional significant resource. Lessons learned from pressure data analysis, modeling, monitoring technologies assessment, accounting, regional mapping and exploration enable the technology advancements needed to allow CCS to be done safely and at a commercial scale.
