TOWARDS A FRAMEWORK FOR THE EXPLICIT USE OF SPECIFIC SYSTEMS THINKING METHODOLOGIES IN DATA WAREHOUSE DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES

Poor design methodology leads to unsuccessful data warehousing projects. Industry professionals identified several success criteria. Although these professionals are not aware of systems thinking concepts, their identified success criteria can be mapped to specific systems thinking methodologies. The authors believe that if this mapping is extended and made explicit, data warehouse development methods can be improved. This paper reports on the process required to develop a framework for the explicit use of specific systems thinking methodologies in data warehouse development practices. Such a framework will only be accepted and implemented by industry professionals if it extends, complements, or alters current data warehousing development practices. This paper introduces a mapping used in case study data analysis to determine the extent to which professionals use systems thinking methodologies unknowingly. These results will be used to develop a framework for the explicit use of systems thinking methodologies in data warehouse development practices.
