Maintaining High Quality Service with Targeted Investments: Development of an Asset Management Plan for a Large Utility

The Piscataway Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is located in Accokeek, MD. Initiallyrncommissioned in the 1960s and currently with an average daily design capacity of 114,000 m3/drn(30 mgd), the Piscataway WWTP is one of the oldest and largest facilities owned and operatedrnby the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). Its size, age, and effluent treatmentrnrequirements make the Piscataway WWTP an ideal candidate for asset management planning.rnAn asset management plan (AMP) has been developed for the Piscataway WWTP and WSSCrnhas recently begun implementation of its recommendations. Development of the AMP requiredrnsignificant involvement from WSSC staff and provides recommendations to improve both thernphysical infrastructure of the facility, and recommendations for the personnel and businessrnprocesses at the Piscataway WWTP to help implement the infrastructure improvements. Thisrnpaper discusses the development process of the AMP and the value it has provided to thernPiscataway WWTP and WSSC organization.
