Performance Comparison of H.323 and SIP-based VoIP Call Setup over Wireless Communication Channels

In this paper we compare the performance of H.323 and SIP-based call setup delay and success rate over wireless communication channels. Based on a robust radio link layer using Radio Link Protocol (RLP), analytical procedures are developed to evaluate the performance of RLP and its interaction with H.32.3/TCP and SIP UDP-based retransmissions. The results show that both SIP and H.323 based call setup performance can be substantially improved by using RLP with a limited number of frame retransmissions (usually less than three) when wireless links' frame error rate (FER) is in the range between 1 % and 40%. While the success rates of SIP and H.323 call setup are very similar, SIP consumes less time in the call setup process with or without the existence of RLP.
