We have been experiencing repeated computer virus attacks over the last decade due to the presence of the Internet and the interconnection of electronic computers across the spectrum. Current technologies are only successful in addressing known viruses, where an anti-virus program is developed after a thorough analysis of the virus in question. This paper explores current research in the area of protection from unknown computer viruses and suggests a possible framework for virus detection by using a human-like immune system approach. Then it suggests techniques that could be used to identify or detect unknown viruses by distinguishing between "self and "non-self.
