A Java - Based Tool For Teaching Image Processing Enhancement Techniques

Image enhancement is one of the main topics discussed in any digital image processing course. However, teaching different enhancement techniques interactively in a simple way that allows comparison of different techniques has always been a challenge. This paper presents an extensible Java-based tool that can be used for teaching image enhancement techniques. The interface has been so designed that different enhancement techniques can be compared and contrasted easily. The tool allows the user to study the effect of applying multiple enhancement techniques on an image consecutively. Java was chosen as the language because of its strength in Graphical User Interface (GUI) development, ability to read and write the most common image formats and portability across several platforms.
