In a large interdisciplinary plant construction project, distributed expert teams were creating common planning documents for the different facilities in concurrent engineering. Numerous stakeholder interests with complex dependencies had to be considered. A major challenge for project management was to establish an efficient communication flow among the teams.rnRequirements management was introduced to enable distributed requirements specification and information exchange on a shared platform. Special emphasis was put on verification and approval procedures for both the requirements and their fulfillment by the designed solution. The implementation was based on a commercial requirements management system (RMS).rnThe paper describes the architecture and customization of the RMS, and the adopted procedures for requirement elicitation, documentation and tracing. The case study demonstrates that methods from software engineering can be profitably applied to other engineering disciplines which are facing similar challenges.
