Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) can be applied to a wide range of applications such as organizational, Internet, adaptive or FIPA compliant applications. Developing such systems requires agents software engineering methodologies. To this end, many methodologies have been proposed such as Gaia (for organizational or Internet applications), ADELF (for adaptive applications) or SABPO (for FIPA compliant applications). These methodologies propose similar development phases that are mostly related to analysis and design. They also use common concepts such as role, agent, coordination and communication; but they still differ in concepts such as belief, plan, intention and goals. Nevertheless, we think it is possible to unify these methodologies into one methodology to design MAS for a wide range of applications. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of agent oriented software engineering methodologies and to propose some guidelines towards an agent unified modelling methodology that we call AUMM for Agent Unified Modelling Methodology. A MAS designer will have only one methodology, AUMM, to learn for the most application domains he works on.
