This study deals with a nonlinear rate dependent friction phenomenon which may occur at the interface between the guide shoe and the rail of a typical elevator in motion. The tests are carried out on a hydraulic vibration table by measuring the friction force between the guide shoe (rubber) and rail (metal). The test shows typical frictional phenomena such as the pre-sliding and gross-sliding, but also the rate dependence (negative/positive friction-velocity slope), which means that the friction is highly susceptible to the variation of the relative speed. The next step of the present work is the modeling for the friction behaviors based on the observation of experimental results. A modal based on Bouc-Wen model is proposed which allow accurate simulation to the friction. The numerical simulation shows that the model agrees with the experimental data quite well, and may be used for the dynamic structure vibration analysis in the elevator systems.
