BackgroundIncreasing evidence has been gathered for p53 de-pendent apoptosis, but it still remains unclear how p53 initiates apoptosis by employing its transcriptional program [1]. It is a common practice to characterize regulation in an "all-or-none" manner: the role a gene plays in a certain biological process is characterized as either "independent" or "dependent"; the relation between genes is characterized as either "correlated" or "uncorrelated". However, such an approach may not be adequate for the comprehension of intricate regulatory networks,especially when much more subtle quantitative interrelationships among multiple genes and their corresponding products are examined and interrogated.
