This paper has two goals: a) to demonstrate a method for modeling special types of nonstationary loads on cars, called cyclostationary loads, and b) propose a procedure for developing an efficient tool for the rapid estimation of road induced loads and the resulting response of a car. The proposed tool could be used in the early design stages to assist designers in making important design trade-offs. Cyclostationary excitations are encountered in many real-life problems involving systems subjected to periodic, random loads. Using a two-degree-of-freedom model of a car traveling on a road made of slabs, the paper demonstrates that the proposed model estimates the statistics of the vehicle response more accurately than a traditional stationary model. The method for developing a response surface model for rapid estimation of the vehicle response involves the construction of a database of designs and their corresponding loads and responses. Stepwise regression is used to fit a response surface approximation to the data in the database.
