Over the past few years, Fibre-Reinforced Polymers (FRP) have proven to be a favourable alternative to conventional steel for reinforcing new concrete structures as well as for the rehabilitation of existing ones. The unique properties of FRP, such as low density, high tensile strength and corrosion-free characteristics, point at FRP as an optimum solution for many challenging projects. For over a decade, FRP rehabilitation systems have been subject to several research programs and their field applications have been under close monitoring. The results of such research and monitoring are utilized to develop and update the FRP rehabilitation systems standards and design guidelines, Herein, the subject structure is a bus terminal that has been serving a subway station in Toronto, Canada, for over 40 years. Due to aging and durability problems, the existing canopy columns, concrete pavement and pedestrian platform required significant structural rehabilitation. The expected superior durability and minimal disturbance to the original structure associated with FRP rehabilitation systems, compared to those of conventional steel-reinforced concrete rehabilitation, favoured FRP throughout the entire rehabilitation scheme. FRP fabric wrapping was utilized for the canopy columns and FRP bars/dowels were selected as the reinforcement for the new concrete pavement/platform. The versatility of the available types of FRP reinforcement enabled the design to satisfy the project requirements from both technical and financial aspects.
