AMYLASE ENZYME ACTIVITY DURING THE GROWTH OF SUGARCANE VARIETIES

Foliar amylase activity patterns in different sugarcane varieties i. e. Co 740, CoM 7613, Co 7219, Co 8021 Co 8011 were studied at different growth phases. The mean amylase activity was found to be on higher side(13.97) units) in the month of August when the crop was six month old. The activity got declined at eighth month (6.84 units) while it again went on increasing up to twelve months of crop age (12.82 units) before going down again at fourteenth month (7.71 units). The average amylase activity of varieties Co 740 and Co 7219 having profuse flowering behavior had higher amylase activity (28.45 and 15. 15 units) than sparse Jlowering varieties CoM 7613, Co 8021 and Co 8011 (9.97, 8.0 and 8.26 units respectively) during the floral initiation period viz. August (six month of crop age). Data on juice analysis of sugarcane suggested that the sucrose and commercial cane sugar percent were uniformly highest in all varieties in the month of February when the crop age was twelve months. However, lower values for these parameters were observed in the month of April.
