ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGNING TUNNEL VENTILATION SYSTEM FOR A ROAD TUNNEL

Besides the aim of providing an acceptable environment for vehicle drivers, the major function of tunnel ventilation system for a road tunnel is to control the spread of smoke and heat so as to provide a smoke-free path for fast evacuation of drivers and passengers, and for access of fire fighting personnel during a tunnel fire situation. This article describes how the environmental quality and safety criteria are met in the design of a tunnel ventilation system in Hong Kong.
