Stance transition between two connective limbs during locomotion is one of the fundamental features of movement. Because the kinematics at some transitions have smaller components than during other large portions of the movement, the traditional biomechanical approaches in quantifying body and kinematics and kinetics, such as using an image-based motion analysis system, are not satisfactory. A system based on the integrated sensor packs (ISPs) was used to study the three-dimensional (3-D) kinematics of human body during locomotion. Each ISP consists of one 3-D MEMS-based accelerometer and one 3-D MEMS-based magnetometer. The system tracks human motion relative to the earth's gravity and magnetic field. The angle, angular velocity of the limbs will then be directly measured. The other objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application of orientation transition including joint angle and axis of rotation between two connective limbs in generating a three-dimensional stick figure from sampled sensor readings. Definition and calculation for the joint angle and axis of rotation between two connective limbs are introduced.
