Organizational History of the Space Collections at the University of Alabama in Huntsville

The history of space activities and Huntsville's involvement was the foundation for the Department of Archives and Special Collections at the library of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The established Special Collections about space history include the Saturn V Collection, the Rudolf Hermann Papers, the Robert L. Forward Collection, the Willy Ley Collection, the Laser Geodynamic Satellite (LAGEOS) Collection, the Skylab (first United States Space Station) Collection, and the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) Collection. The LAGEOS and Skylab Collections are the first results of a current working partnership between the NASA/MSFC Retirees Association and the Department of Archives and Special Collections. Seeking to preserve the records of the generation who initiated the space program and sent men to the moon, the Retirees are actively engaged in assembly and organization of their documents and artifacts. These Collections about space programs are being housed in the UAH Archives and Special Collections Department.
