On the Urban Green Space Management and Protection in Wuhan

The Wuhan Urban Green Space (UGS) involves large open areas of "river, lake, forest, farmland" with the structure of "Green Belt + Green Wedge + Green Corridor". As a pilot city of the "two-oriented society, study on the management and protection strategy of UGS in Wuhan with the goal of "low carbon" is particularly important. Nowadays the most severe problem of Wuhan UGS is structural damage and environmental pollution in the main built-up area. In this paper, firstly, by the analysis of statistical data and typical case, the conflicts between UGS and urban development are discussed in three aspects: occupied water areas by the urban expansion, UGS restoration in old urban area, and the lag of urban infrastructure construction. Secondly, the excessive development of the city and the neglect of UGS management and protection are concluded as the reason of the conflicts. Finally, a special UGS management and protection planning is suggested to draw up, and by the establishment of a coordination mechanism among the government, the experts, and the citizens to ensure effective implementation of the planning.
