The 2020 IMO 0.5% sulphur content on marine fuel changes the parameters for engine cylinderoil selection once more, as owners decide whether to switch to LSHFO or LNG, or deployexhaust gas recovery and stay with HSHFO.Shell Marine’s continuously evolving two-stroke engine cylinder oil portfolio will be fully readyfor 2020 but, with 3 million b/d of HSFO expected to be displaced by 0.5% sulphur content fuel,the group has concerns over the consistency of fuel in different locations. Therefore, ShellMarine is also focused on the technical services offered for a world of fuel quality uncertainty.Shell Marine’s technical service palette now includes onboard and remote Shell LubeMonitorcylinder condition monitoring, lab-based Shell LubeAnalyst services, field engineer supportthrough Shell LubeAdvisor and Shell LubeCoach crew training. This paper will focus on a newgeneration of data-rich technical servicing and support required to manage engineperformance, crew knowledge, cylinder oil consumption and onboard stockholding, andpredictive intervention.It will show that technical services provide a critical pillar in Shell Marine’s unique MILES(Marine Integrated Lubrication and Expert Solutions) – which combines purchasing options,services and high-quality cylinder oils in a multi-faceted strategy addressing the most pressingcustomer operational concerns.
