Companies seem to fall victim tothe most popular movement (TOC, JIT, TQM, etc) of the day without understanding the impact of the movements on their competitive positions. Organizations frequently follow the copy strategy as they believe it provides a competitive safety net. This approach can never sustain a leadership position in the market place. Very few organizations are willing to take the road less traveled and create the vision of tomorrow. This paper will show how to synergistically integrate the various philosophies- Theory of Constraints (TOC), Justin Time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Participative Management for agile competition using a new plant design at Whirlpool as an example. Even though TOC has become a very popular philosophy, most people have not focused on the true capability of TOC-to help focus strategies direction. This paper will also expose attendees on how to exploit the real strength of TOC.
