The objective of this paper is to present a general methodology for the synthesis and design of batch processes. However, for the synthesis to be complete the operational modelling of the individual batch operations, such as reaction and separation, needs to be performed. The general methodology comprises a set of algorithms that supply the batch operational routes, which are a sequence of sub-tasks performed in order to achieve a specific objective for the reaction or separation task. That sequence is the operational model for every unit. Three algorithms are highlighted for the operational design of batch reactors, distillation columns and crystallizers. The algorithms are tested on case studies and the application results, including verification of the generated operational sequences through dynamic simulation, are presented.
