An extensive study of the dynamic interaction between the model support structure and a High Speed Research model in the National Transonic Facility is presented. Dynamic testing along with supporting analyses accurately characterized the natural modes and forced response characteristics of the National Transonic Facility model and model support system. Severe yaw vibrations of a High Speed Research model during recent wind tunnel tests were found to be due to a forced response resulting from a model system yaw mode natural frequency coinciding with a yaw mode natural frequency of the model support structure. Possible approaches to vibration alleviation are presented from the standpoint of model design, detuning model system modes from model support structure modes, and vibration attenuation of the massive model support structure.
