Open-cell preceramic polymer foams were produced by heating a poly(silsesquioxane) in the temperature range between 200 and 300℃. During heating condensation products from cross-linking (H_2O, ethanol, benzene) lead to foam formation and the curing reaction increased the precursor viscosity. The mechanism of the foaming process was studied with respect to cell size control. Alumina fillers were added to tailor the materials properties. The filler-containing foams were converted into ceramic foams by pyrolysis between 1000 and 1400℃ in air and covered with a zeolite coating by the carrier-supported crystallization process. The open cell materials are of interest as multifunctional light weight structures for sorption and catalysis.
