Cellular oxide ceramics from filler loaded silicone resins

A poly (phenyl methylsilsesquioxane) was used as a polymer precursor to fabricate oxideceramic foams. Foaming was achieved by heating the polymer in a temperature interval between 200℃ and 300℃. Gaseous condensation products were released that foamed the polymer melt. Oxidic fillers were added and the foams were pyrolysed in air between 600℃ and 1600℃ which resulted in open cell ceramic foams with dense struts and mean cell sizes ranging from 0.5 mm to 2 mm and narrow cell size and strut thickness distribution. The influence of external pressure during foaming was studied. Structural features of the foams were investigated by quantitative micro computer tomography (QCT).
