Utilization of Sugarcane Bagasse for Producing Useful Chemicals

To produce D-lactic acid from agricultural or other lignocellulose residues, the production of fermentable sugars from unutilized sugarcane baggase was studied by hydrothermal method, steam explosion and further saccharification of the pretreated solid residues. Pretreatment with steam-explosion was performed at 25, 35atm steaming pressure for 5 minutes. As a maximum, 65% and 44% of reducing sugar and glucose in the residue material were obtained at 2 5 arm steaming pressure. The high D-lactic acid production (4.9 g/L) was attained from steam-exploded bagasse as well as basal medium when steam-exploded bagasse was washed with water and ethanol after steam-explosion.
