Location Selection of the Welfare Institutionfor the Elderly in Nagasaki City Using GIS

Japan is one of the countries where the number ofrnthe elderly people is most rapidly increasing. This study aimsrnto locate the suitable areas for the lodgings of elderly people,rnusing Geographical Information System (GIS). We focused onrnthe areas where the residents can live a usual and customaryrnlife, which includes walking, shopping, hospitalizing etc.rnCombining the geographical and municipal data along withrnsome other information obtained from social factors, wernperformed selection of the optimal locations for welfarerninstitutions. Out of 413 areas within Nagasaki City threerndifferent areas were found suitable for such elderly peoplernlodging.
