摘要

The authors have examined recent ballistic impact modeling with the intent of understanding the volumetric internal damage distributions revealed by advanced high resolution x-ray computed tomography (XCT) visualizations. Techniques for visualizing and quantifying meso-scale damage distributions have been developed and are undergoing continuing refinement. Several XCT observations have revealed the non-uniformity and asymmetry of failure in symmetrical impact damage experiments, which is not accommodated in existing predictive damage models. A related concern is determining an optimal format for documenting such quantified XCT data in a way which best supports analyses by the modeling community. The intent of these experimental XCT efforts includes the challenge of stimulating future model refinement within existing 3D codes to accommodate post-damage distributions visualized and now quantified by the XCT damage assessment methodology.
