This paper presents the design and implementation ofrna real-time tracking and monitoring device of thernposition, velocity, and physiological states of a horsernfor equestrian training purpose. The system consistsrnof a mobile unit, a base station, and a wireless radiornmodem that allows a mobile unit and a base stationrnto communicate over the industrial, scientific, andrnmedical (ISM) radio band. The core of the mobilernunit is a microprocessor which interfaces with arncommercial GPS receiver module, a low-cost inertialrnmeasurement unit (IMU), and a horse heart raternsensor. The base station is a computer equipped withrnreal-time data acquisition, processing, and analysisrnsoftware. A Kalman filter is implemented to looselyrncouple the GPS and IMU measurements to capturernthe horse position and motion dynamics. Field testrnresults will be presented in the paper.
