We recently passed into the 21~(st) Century and it is time to assess the challenges facing System Safety in the new millennium. System Safety has been proven to be a fairly stable engineering discipline over the last twenty-plus years. MIL-STD-882B/C/D has pretty much been our guide in the largely successful pursuit of developing safe systems. System safety techniques and analyses are fairly well understood and practiced with varied degrees of success from organization to organization. The System Safety discipline has grown in recognition of its professionalism and necessity. All seems well. Unfortunately, the successes System Safety has experienced in the past are not guaranteed or possibly even indicative of the future. Several new issues are facing our community requiring System Safety Professionals to reassess processes, analyses, methodologies, and commitment. We, the system safety community, must be proactive in the assessment of technological innovations as they become available, and, if possible, before they are incorporated in critical systems.
