This paper is an outcome of a thorough research and extensive simulation development project, focused on designing a MATLAB simulation for STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) with attention concentrating on its trigger circuit. STATCOM is a FACTS device that enables real time VAR compensation. This makes a system least prone to short term faults cascading into large catastrophes, pushing the system into a total halt. The trigger system here deigned is a novel approach to the various triggering methods already implemented. It makes use of numerical analysis techniques to analyze the data extracted from a part of the simulation to derive relations that form the basis of algorithm used to develop control signal for the triggering block, the PWM generator. It made extensive use of SimPowerSystems library of MATLAB Simulink and various mathematical tools available for numerical data analysis.
