The integration of distributed generation (DG) sources can cause significant impacts on distribution networks like rise in local voltage profile, losses and particularly changes in the magnitudes and directions of short circuit currents that may lead to false tripping or fail to trip over-current protection relays in the system. It is expensive and technically challenging to redesign/reconfigure and/or to replace the original protection system for a distribution network. In this paper an attempt has been made to determine the size and number and location of DGs that can be connected to a test system viz., RBTS bus 2 without violating the voltage profile, loss constraints and satisfying the existing protection co-ordination. The effect of this determined DG location on the system reliability is also evaluated.
