It is well known in business improvement circles that good management does not necessarilyrnequal good leadership. This applies to PSM as well. Effectively leading the translation of PSMrnto action for all whom it affects takes several concurrent actions beyond what is written in PSMrnregulations.rnThis paper covers 10 key actions as well as examples of how those actions have translated intornincreased understanding and involvement by employees and contractors in one petroleumrnrefinery, working towards improved PSM performance.rn1. As a leader, you better understand PSM yourself; Train the leaders at the highest ranks of thernfacilityrn2. Show each part of the organization how the elements of PSM fit with daily work activityrn3. Focus on the “why” of PSM in each PSM conversation & training sessionrn4. Incorporate PSM into existing key business toolsrn5. Walk the talk‐ even when it hurts, emphasizing safety and quality over schedule and costrn6. Reward positive behaviorsrn7. Publicize progress and learningsrn8. Take time to communicate competitive advantage of good process safetyrn9. Have the discipline to fully investigate failures and drive effective action item resolutionrn10. Determine how to address “world hunger” issues
