Research on collision effects of the interception projectile against the attacking object in active EM armor

Active electromagnetic (EM) armor is a new kind of active defense system, which consists of advanced detector, control system, high pulsed-power supply and EM launcher. Electric energy provided by the high pulsed-power supply can be transformed into kinetic energy of the interception projectile with EM launcher. Hit by interception projectiles, the attacking object can be destroyed totally or deviated from its trajectory. Collision effect of the interception projectile against the attacking target is an important index to the active EM armor. Taking the physical crashing process of the interception projectile against the armor piercing projectile for example, a 3D finite element model is set up and crashing process of the interception projectile against the armor piercing projectile is researched on condition that the crashing angle is 30°, 45°and 60° respectively. The influence laws of collision effect resulting from the structure parameters changing of the interception projectile with steel-aluminum composite are analyzed. The results show that the warhead of armor piercing projectile is passivated and broken, velocity decreased, direction deflected and its armor-piercing ability reduces obviously. The collision effect of interception projectile with steel-aluminum composite to the armor piercing projectile increases apparently.
