Autonomy and Self-discipline: On the Reform and Development of Higher Education

Since the 1980s, the autonomy of higher education has become an important education management thought in the development of China's higher education reform. It is also an inevitable choice for China's higher education to hold fair competition open to the market and to run schools with characteristics open to the world. The fundamental reason for the expansion of university autonomy and the continuously strengthening of international competitiveness is that in the situation of the market competition, schools need to build a self-regulatory mechanism as well as the autonomy. Colleges and universities' self-regulatory mechanism must base on laws and regulations, and achieve the unity of autonomy and self-discipline through inter-school competition.
