This paper discusses the use of two modeling methods in the conceptual design of a novel 5-axis machine tool. Bond graphs were used to create lumped models of the mechanical components and pneumatic ballast system of the machine tool. A distributed model of these components and systems was also created using ADAMS mechanical modeling software and a comparison of the two modeling methods was made.
