The objective of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of a semi-active vibration absorber developed for an offshore oil platform on mitigating structural vibration. To study its behavior subject to wave loading, the actual structure is modeled as a two-degree-of-freedom dynamic system. Installed a new and innovative variable stiffness tuned mass damper (VSTMD) on the top deck of the platform, the coupled equations are elevated, and the vibration behavior is studied under the sea states measured in Mexico Gulf in 1996. The analysis demonstrates that the deck acceleration standard deviation can be decreased by the average of 21.38% compared with that of the structure without VSTMD. The deck displacement standard deviation is also suppressed. The result indicates that the VSTMD device can provide a reliable and inexpensive means of achieving vibration control for the offshore engineering structures.
