Despite several decades of careful, thoughtful thinking and empirical work on noise and cognitive performance, we still have very little in the way of a clear and detailed theoretical model of how noise affects cognition. One way to pursue the theorizing about noise effects on cognition is to formulate and test possible mediating links between noise on the independent side and cognitive outcomes on the dependent side. This was done in the present paper with data from a three-wave study of children around the new and old airports in Munich. The results indicate a cluster of reading and language mastery tasks that are interrelated to each other, and partially mediate noise effects on long-term recall.
