The efficient design of aquifer remediation projects has been a challenge to practitioners ever since the start of he environmetnal remediation industry. This paper discusses the development and application of a remedial design optimization algorithm that minimizes the cost of an aquifer remediation program based on groundwater extraction. Teh algorithm, which is heuristic in structure, combiens groundwater flow and transport models with economic analysis and represents a significant improvement over the "trial and error" appraoch to remedial design. the theoretical approach of the optimization algorithm and its application to a remediation site are discussed.
